You will be using 12-2 electric wires. A 12-2 cable is the common term for a cable that has one black wire (to connect to the electrical current supply), one white wire (to connect to the common bar) and one green wire for grounding. The 12 in 12-2 refers to gauge 12, while the 2 refers to the black wire and the white wire. The green wire is not included in the description.
- Shut off the power at the main panel. Locate the devices connected to the circuit that you will be upgrading. If there are more than one devices connected, then you will need to connect one cable section for each device. For instance, if you have an overhead light and a light switch, then you will have to put in one section that goes from the power panel to the light switch and another one that connects to the overhead light.
- To disconnect the old wires at the light fixture: twist off the plastic caps at the end of the wires. On the new black and white wires, strip off about half an inch of insulation. Connect the new black wire to the fixture’s black wires and top off with a new plastic cap. Do the same for the white wires. Afterwards, remove the old electrical wire from the junction box of the fixture. If there are ground wires (green), connect them as well.
- Locate the junction box for the light switch and remove the switch so that you can check if it needs replacement. Disconnect the light switch from the old wiring and put in new ones so that there are two new cables leading into the switch box.
- Connect the black wires from the main power panel and the light switch. Reinstall the rewired light switch into the switch box and come back to the main power panel. Do the same with the white and green wires, respectively.
- Shut off the main power switch located at the power panel and pull out the breaker for the circuit which you are rewiring. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the black wire from the breaker as well as the green and white wires from the common bar. If these wires cannot be removed, cut them off from the power panel. Take a new cable and strip off about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of all three wires.
- Connect the new ground wire and the new white wire to the common bar. Connect the black wire to the circuit breaker as well.
- Plug the circuit breaker back into its slot within the panel.
- Turn the main power switch back on, then the circuit switch. Test that the upgraded circuit is working properly. If the breaker trips when it is turned on, you will have to double check your wiring and redo it properly.
Of course, keep in mind that working with electricity can be extremely hazardous. Do not attempt a DIY project if you do not have the proper training or skills for the task. Anytime that you feel unsure or uncomfortable about doing the electrical upgrade yourself, better hire a professional to take over the project for you.
